Since the fall and break-up of the Soviet Union, Mongolia’s healthcare has emerged as a free-market healthcare model. It has been struggling to transition from a state-run public healthcare to free market private healthcare enterprise. They have very eager doctors but have been lacking in training & mentorship. The present generation of ophthalmologists are breaking the mould. They have been travelling to other countries to gain expertise and returning to their home country to provide service. They have a genuine thirst for international interaction and collaboration.

Treat the disease and not the symptom
RG Kar Medical College is a 138 year old institution with a rich history and several eminent alumni. It is present within in a sprawling 26 acre campus in the heart of the city of Kolkata. Yet, it required the brutal rape and murder of a doctor there in the midst of a busy bustling hospital for everyone to know that there is no female duty doctor’s room within the emergency building.

2021: A New Year- New Possibilities
2020 has been an incredible year. For sure it has been a tough year but in all the difficult periods there are the big life lessons. The paranoia of the early days of the pandemic has given way to a little breathing space now. This pandemic has been a pause button on our lives and it was a time to take stock. It made us realise how privileged we were to have the things we had taken for for granted. It showed us what was truly important in our lives and what was the fluff in it.

When will Artificial Intelligence replace Human Doctors?
AI robots will be complementary to human doctors and won’t be a zero-sum game for a long time to come. AIs will help us reduce our mistakes, decrease our workload, make us work more sane hours and in turn manage our work-life balance- but at least in the foreseeable future they aren’t going to replace us. Maybe it will lead to lot of us doing less mundane, repetitive jobs and with doctors doing much higher intellectual level work.
Why I love what I do?
I wasn’t a natural at being a doctor and struggled a little bit in medical school. Medical school was sometimes confusing and intimidating. I picked up empathy along the way and learnt to be compassionate to other people. I found out that I loved the difference that I bought to others and got better at doing my job. A lot of what I love about my job today, I discovered while being a doctor. If I hadn’t taken up medicine I would have never found out how much I would enjoy it.
The Alina Project- TVM’s first steps into Vietnam!
The Vision Mission (TVM) travelled to Vietnam in July-August, 2019. TVM was collaborating with Alina Vision, USA to set up a Medical Retina Service and Oculoplastics service at Alina’s first eye hospital in Hanoi, Vietnam. TVM’s goals as an organisation has been at capacity building, sustainability and access to sub-speciality eye care in under-served areas in East and South Asia. This found mutual synergies with Alina Vision. This Project was named “The Alina Project”
